Principal Software Engineer – Java

Location: Remote (U.S./Canada)
Compensation: $180,000 – $230,000 + stock options
Clearance: U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (Preferred)

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the charge on API architecture and core middle-tier development. This is a high-impact individual contributor role focused on designing scalable business logic, managing complex integrations, and guiding the technical evolution of our backend systems.

What You’ll Do

• Architect and implement enterprise-grade Java-based middle-tier services.
• Define and evolve API contracts, service layers, and data flow logic.
• Work with PL/SQL and large relational databases (primarily Oracle) to access and transform data.
• Serve as a technical leader across engineering teams, setting standards for code quality and system design.
• Partner with product, clinical, and R&D teams to translate business requirements into clean, scalable backend implementations.
• Lead initiatives for improving performance, reliability, and maintainability of our systems.
• Provide mentorship to senior engineers and influence technical direction through reviews, proposals, and architecture guidance.

What You Bring

• 13+ years of experience developing Java-based backend and middle-tier systems.
• Strong track record designing and maintaining large, distributed REST API-based applications.
• Expert-level experience with SQL/PLSQL and complex enterprise RDBMS environments (Oracle preferred).
• Proven ability to navigate technical tradeoffs and design with scalability, maintainability, and clarity in mind.
• Experience with Java frameworks like Spring Boot, JAX-RS, or equivalent.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and cloud deployment strategies.
• Outstanding collaboration and communication skills — you influence through clarity and quality, not authority.

Bonus Points

• Experience in healthcare, medical informatics, or regulated industries.
• Hands-on experience modernizing legacy systems and APIs.
• Exposure to HL7, FHIR, or other healthcare interoperability standards.
